When he asks for the love of a beautiful woman, the twist comes not in the wish, but in the Demon’s final demand: the woman’s life or his own return to obscurity. The choice leaves the man with a quiet, knowing smile as he returns to his broom. Art by John Forte, with cover by Harry Anderson.
In "The Poor Old Man," a humble man sweeping floors in a dimly lit bar is approached by a Demon offering a wish—no soul, no life, just a simple request. He asks for the love of a beautiful woman, and when she appears, the Demon returns with a chilling choice: her life or his return to obscurity. The story lingers on the quiet weight of that decision, leaving the man with a strange smile as he returns to his work, and the woman left wondering why he looks so different.
In "Progress!", a reclusive hermit stands defiant against the encroaching highway, setting mines to stop the bulldozers—only to find his land bypassed by a tunnel beneath his property. When his house collapses and he ventures out, he's struck down by a passing car, a grim casualty of the road that wouldn’t wait.
