Strange Fruit #1 (2015) introduces a haunting, grounded tale set in a Southern town on the brink of floodwaters, where a silent, towering black man—arrived from a mysterious crash—steps into a community gripped by fear and violence. Written by J. G. Jones and Mark Waid, with all interior art, inks, colors, and letters by Jones, the story unfolds with quiet intensity, centered on a boy named Jo and the enigmatic figure known only as Johnson. The cover by J. G. Jones captures the story’s eerie, atmospheric tone.

As floods threaten a small town in the southern U.S., Ku Klux Klan members round up black men for forced labor on the levees. A small white boy goes missing as a silent black man arrives. He is almost twice the size of a normal man and possesses prodigious strength. He never speaks, and presumably has arrived by what appears to be a crashed spacecraft. He drives off Klan members, and Sonny christens him Johnson.
