As floods threaten a small town in the southern U.S., Ku Klux Klan members round up black men for forced labor on the levees. A small white boy goes missing as a silent black man arrives. He is almost twice the size of a normal man and possesses prodigious strength. He never speaks, and presumably has arrived by what appears to be a crashed spacecraft. He drives off Klan members, and Sonny christens him Johnson.
