“The Cadet and the Corsairs Part 1”

Marvel's space-faring renegades make a striking impression on this opening issue, with the cover by Alé Garza presenting two alien heroes — a silver-skinned, pointed-eared woman armed with a pistol and a blue-clad, pointed-eared warrior thrusting a staff skyward — posed atop a massive, snarling green reptilian creature against a fiery red alien sky. The composition has real energy, conveying a crew that operates on the wilder edges of the galaxy. Writer Kevin J. Anderson kicks off "The Cadet and the Corsairs" here, promising cosmic adventure with a team that clearly doesn't play it safe.

Cadet Tolo Hawk is attending a fancy dinner in honor of Princess Sabra on a spaceship bound for the royal planet Kinshaa when Verdian Terce brings in a Thorn pirate and has him executed in front of the guests. Unbeknownst to Tolo and the Princess, Terce is hooked on the Thorn drug Hyrax and has political aspirations to overthrow the Princess so that the Committee on which he serves can rule. The space journey is interrupted as the Thorn Pirates and the Starjammers attack looking for their captured comrade.
