About this Issue

Last Stand #4 closes out the twelve-issue Battle of Jakku maxi-series — the first comic project to dramatize the final moments of the Galactic Civil War directly through the eyes of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Lando Calrissian, a perspective that Chuck Wendig's prose Aftermath trilogy had deliberately left aside. Most significantly, the issue delivers the first-ever comic appearance of Ben Solo, depicted as a newborn on the same day the Galactic Concordance was signed, connecting the end of the classic trilogy era to the sequel era in a single visual tableau. The epilogue, set in the Fenril sector, plants story threads — including a mysterious figure called the Praetor — that feed directly into Alex Segura's subsequent Star Wars (2025) ongoing series, making this issue a narrative hinge between two distinct publishing eras.

History

The Battle of Jakku maxi-series was announced at New York Comic Con 2024 as Marvel's deliberate pivot away from its long-running post-Empire Strikes Back storylines into the post-Return of the Jedi era. Writer Alex Segura — already known to Star Wars readers for the novel Poe Dameron: Free Fall — was tasked with scripting all twelve issues across three consecutive four-issue miniseries (Insurgency Rising, Republic Under Siege, Last Stand), each drawn by a rotating artistic team that included Leonard Kirk, Stefano Raffaele, and Jethro Morales. Last Stand #4 specifically was penciled and inked by Jethro Morales with colors by Jim Campbell, lettering by VC's Joe Caramagna, editing by Mark Paniccia, and a main cover by E.M. Gist; the issue shipped on an almost weekly cadence alongside its three companion issues in January 2025, a production schedule that reviewers noted left limited room for editorial cross-checking against the Aftermath novels.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published January 22, 2025 by Marvel Comics; written by Alex Segura, art by Jethro Morales, colors by Jim Campbell, letters by VC's Joe Caramagna, cover by E.M. Gist, edited by Mark Paniccia.
  • Fourth and final issue of the Last Stand miniseries, itself the concluding chapter of the twelve-issue Battle of Jakku maxi-series spanning three miniseries: Insurgency Rising, Republic Under Siege, and Last Stand.
  • Contains the first comic book appearance of Ben Solo, shown as a newborn cradled by Leia Organa, surrounded by Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2.
  • Set in 5 ABY, concurrent with the events of Chuck Wendig's novel Aftermath: Empire's End; the issue dramatizes Commodore Kyrsta Agate's sacrifice using the Starhawk Concord's tractor beam to bring down the Super Star Destroyer Ravager, a climactic moment adapted from the novel.
  • Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard — a villain originating in the 2015 mobile game Star Wars: Uprising and named 'Ubrik' in Scum & Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious — meets his end in this issue, shot by Rynn Zenat aboard his Star Destroyer Scepter before he can elaborate on a cryptic warning.
  • Rae Sloane is tasked by the dying Gallius Rax to follow through with Palpatine's Contingency in the Unknown Regions, foreshadowing the eventual formation of the First Order.
  • An epilogue scene in the Fenril sector introduces a cloaked figure called the Praetor meeting with Prime Minister Kezrin Almovar of Pirros, a direct setup for threats to be explored in Segura's subsequent Star Wars (2025) ongoing series.
  • The complete twelve-issue maxi-series was collected in an omnibus edition released June 3, 2025; the issue shipped with two variant covers — a Danny Earls variant and a John Giang variant — in addition to the main E.M. Gist cover.
