About this Issue

Star Wars: Battle of Jakku — Last Stand #1 opens the concluding chapter of Marvel's ambitious 12-part maxi-series that brought the previously uncharted period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens into full comic-book canon. It is the first issue in Marvel's post-Return of the Jedi storytelling era to place the Galactic Civil War's final battle — a conflict previously depicted only in video games and prose novels — at the center of a monthly ongoing narrative, filling a gap that Star Wars comics had never directly addressed. The issue inaugurates the formal comics debut of Han Solo in the post-Endor timeline after an extended absence from the medium, re-introduces the Spice Runners of Kijimi as active political players bridging Segura's own Poe Dameron: Free Fall novel into canon comics, and presents Thrawn visually modeled on Lars Mikkelsen's live-action appearance in Ahsoka — the first consistent instance of that design alignment in a canon Marvel title.

History

The entire Battle of Jakku maxi-series was announced ahead of San Diego Comic-Con 2024 by Lucasfilm Publishing and Marvel, revealed on StarWars.com as a headline event that would immediately succeed the then-current mainline Star Wars and Darth Vader comic runs. Editor Mark Paniccia guided the project, with writer Alex Segura — already embedded in this corner of the Star Wars universe through his Poe Dameron: Free Fall novel and Return of the Jedi: The Rebellion one-shot — scripting all twelve issues across the three constituent miniseries. Last Stand #1 was released on December 25, 2024, with the remaining three issues shipping in rapid succession through January 2025, and the full maxi-series was subsequently collected in a trade paperback released June 3, 2025. Several characters Segura had created for Poe Dameron: Free Fall, including Zeva Bliss and Tomasso, were carried forward into the maxi-series, giving the project an unusual degree of authorial continuity across prose and comics.

Trivia · 7 facts

  • Written by Alex Segura; pencils by Jethro Morales (main story) and Leonard Kirk (backup); colors by Jim Campbell; letters by Joe Caramagna; edited by Mark Paniccia.
  • The issue contains two distinct stories: the main story ('Wronged and Reborn') and a backup titled 'False Histories,' both written by Segura.
  • Han Solo makes his return to Star Wars comics in this issue after an extended absence from the medium, appearing near Takodana in a scene consistent with his post-Kashyyyk liberation timeline in the Aftermath novels.
  • Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard — introduced in the earlier Insurgency Rising miniseries and derived from the defunct mobile game Star Wars: Uprising — is confirmed alive after having been jettisoned from his Star Destroyer at the end of Republic Under Siege, restarting his revenge arc.
  • Thrawn appears in a cameo role and is notably drawn in the likeness of actor Lars Mikkelsen, reflecting his live-action debut in the Ahsoka series — a design update from prior canon comic appearances.
  • Characters Zeva Bliss and Tomasso (Spice Runners of Kijimi) appear as significant players; Segura originally created both characters for his Star Wars novel Poe Dameron: Free Fall, making this issue part of a deliberate cross-media continuity.
  • The maxi-series as a whole draws on and sometimes contradicts established canon from Chuck Wendig's Aftermath Trilogy novels and the Star Wars: Uprising mobile game; Wookieepedia flags several continuity discrepancies, including Rae Sloane's rank and Bragh's survival status.
