The 2025 Star Wars ongoing was announced in January 2025 as Marvel's deliberate pivot away from Original Trilogy-era storytelling, handing the flagship book to writer Alex Segura — who had just finished the twelve-issue Battle of Jakku maxiseries — and artist Phil Noto, known for his work on the Poe Dameron series. Segura described the post-Jakku era as 'relatively wide open' compared to his previous work, which had to navigate dense established canon, while Noto noted the creative freedom of designing new looks for the classic trio without any competing film or live-action reference from this specific timeline. Issue #2 published June 11, 2025, one month after the series launched on May 7, with editor Mark Paniccia overseeing the title and letterer Clayton Cowles completing the core creative team.

Rynn Zenat, a New Republic X-Wing pilot and Luke's partner in the field, first appeared in Star Wars: Battle of Jakku — Insurgency Rising #1 (October 2024, also by Segura); she is among the first Segura-created characters to carry over into the ongoing flagship series.
