“Countdown [Part 1]”

Jean-Luc Picard stares out from Jim Salvati's striking cover portrait with quiet authority — older, weathered, and unmistakably himself against a vast, star-filled backdrop. Written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson with art by Angel Hernández, this 2020 IDW collection gathers the Countdown prequel story bridging Picard's legendary Starfleet past with the world of his acclaimed CBS All Access series. A compelling starting point for fans eager to see what brought the admiral back into the stars.

Having escaped from his Romulan captors with the help of Zhaban and Laris, Picard learns that Governor Shiana has taken control of the Verity. After she is defeated and Picard resumes command, they face a threat from a Tal Shiar ship. Zhaban and Laris are revealed as Tal Shiar agents whose mission was to destroy the Verity, but instead they side with Picard against the Tal Shiar. After the confrontation ends, Zhaban and Laris know that they can never return home, and Picard invites them back to Earth to work in the Picard vineyards in France.
