About this Collection

This collection brings together the six-issue Star Trek: Alien Spotlight miniseries from IDW, each installment focusing on a different iconic alien species from the franchise—such as the Klingons, Romulans, and Borg—through standalone stories written by various creators. The anthology explores the cultures, conflicts, and perspectives of these races, offering a deeper dive into the Star Trek universe beyond the main crew narratives.

In "The Old Ways," set before the original series, Spock’s presence on the Enterprise stirs unease as the ship arrives on Magefferus-3 to mediate between warring factions. When the landing party is captured, the natives spare them—not out of mercy, but because Spock’s composure under pressure fascinates them. Written by James Patrick and illustrated by Josep Maria Beroy, with colors by Mario Boon and Andrew Elder and letters by Chris Mowry, this 2008 IDW tale explores first contact through a quiet, character-driven lens, spotlighting Spock’s early days aboard the Enterprise. Cover by Josep Maria Beroy.

Story is set before the time period of the original TV show, when Spock has only just joined the crew of Enterprise and the captain is Christopher Pike. The Enterprise goes to Magefferus-3 to help bring peace between the various warrior groups there. Meanwhile there is some dissent as to whether a Vulcan belongs on the Enterprise crew. The Enterprise landing party is ambushed and captured, but Spock's fearless calm intrigues the natives, who spare the landing party solely to learn more about Spock.
