DC's Star Trek #52 (1993) promises a genuinely unsettling encounter, with the cover tagline "A Chilling First Contact!" setting the tone perfectly. Rod Whigham and Carlos Garzón depict a small group of Starfleet officers in red cold-weather gear surrounded on all sides by a menagerie of towering, fanged alien creatures — reptilian, serpentine, and winged — looming in from every direction against an icy, smoke-filled landscape. Writer Diane Duane joins artists Whigham and Arne Starr for "Epic Proportions," and if the cover is any indication, this frozen-world standoff is every bit as daunting as the title suggests.
