“The Mummies of Heitius VII”

A crewman in Starfleet gold fires his phaser at an advancing mummy — one of several bandage-wrapped figures swarming through an eerie, machinery-filled landscape strewn with skulls and bones — while a fallen red-shirt lies motionless nearby and photo insets of Spock and Kirk watch from the upper corner. Gold Key's 1973 cover by George Wilson sets the stakes right there in the tagline: "Death Grazes the Enterprise Crew When 10,000-Year-Old Mummies Come to Life!" It's a wonderfully pulpy blend of science fiction and horror that makes "The Mummies of Heitius VII" one of the more imaginative premises in the Gold Key Star Trek run.
