Star Spangled Comics #54

This March 1946 DC issue puts the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian front and center in a rooftop gunfight straight from the cover — the Guardian leaps through the air in his blue and gold costume while the young Newsboys scramble among crates and a large ship's wheel as armed criminals open fire from behind a barrier, smoke still curling from the barrel. The story is billed as "Dead-Shot Dade's Revenge," promising exactly the kind of sharp, kinetic action that Jack Kirby (pencils) and Steve Brodie (inks) deliver so vividly here. A fine example of mid-1940s DC adventure, and the cover even finds room to remind readers to join the March of Dimes — a nice slice of the era's civic spirit alongside all the excitement.
