A film unit arrives in the small Australian outback town of Wombalong to make a true romance picture about the days of the early settlers. Nicola's cousin was supposed to be their guide through the bush to the location where the events really happened, but when he breaks his ankle the film unit is stuck in town. Having accompanied Tom since she was a kid, Nicola offers to take his place as their guide. With no other option, the director agrees.
