Spooky #2

As one of Harvey's earliest spin-off titles, it helped establish a template of 'good-bad' protagonists in the all-ages humor genre: a mischievous ghost whose compulsive need to scare people put him at odds with polite ghostly society, offering young readers a relatable counterpoint to Casper's relentless sweetness. The series that this issue helped solidify would run for 161 issues through 1980, making Spooky one of Harvey's most durable solo franchises and a genuine pillar of the Silver Age humor-comics landscape.

Spooky was created by animator Larz Bourne and made his debut in Casper the Friendly Ghost #10 (June 1953), where the Casper comics were written and edited by Sid Jacobson and drawn by Warren Kremer. Two years of supporting appearances built enough readership recognition that Harvey launched a dedicated solo title in late 1955; issue #2 followed in January 1956 as part of that initial wave. Authorship of the individual stories across the run was largely uncredited and remains unclear, though Kremer, Jacobson, and Howard 'Howie' Post are all documented as contributors to the character's development. Harvey's internal practice of binding each month's output into hardcover archive volumes means that Spooky #2 was also preserved in the company's own 'Harvey Famous Name Comics' bound collection for that month.
