About this Issue

Spider-Men II #1 carries the single most consequential debut in the miniseries: the first appearance of the Earth-616-native Miles Morales, a criminal and former associate of Wilson Fisk who later resurfaces as the villain Ultimatum — making this issue the foundational chapter of an entirely new antagonist built out of the multiverse's most recognizable name. The issue also resolved a five-year-old cliffhanger dangling from the final page of the 2012 Spider-Men series, in which Peter Parker searched his universe for a Miles Morales counterpart and was visibly shaken by what he found — an unresolved hook that had become one of Marvel's longest-gestating sequel teases of the decade. Structurally, the series represents a meaningful narrative inversion: whereas the 2012 original sent the young, Ultimate-universe Miles into Peter's world, Spider-Men II places both heroes firmly on Earth-616 together for the first time, signaling how completely Miles had been integrated into the mainstream Marvel continuity following Secret Wars. The issue also marks the final major Miles Morales project that Bendis and Pichelli — the character's co-creators — produced together before Bendis departed Marvel for DC Comics.

Spider-Men II reunited the exact creative team behind both the original 2012 Spider-Men miniseries and Miles Morales's debut: writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, who had co-created Miles in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1 (2011). Marvel announced the sequel in April 2017, with the first issue releasing on July 12, 2017 — roughly five years after the original series ended and just two years after Secret Wars rewrote the Marvel multiverse and transplanted Miles into Earth-616. The series ran for five issues under editor-in-chief Axel Alonso, with letters by VC's Chris Eliopoulos and colors by Justin Ponsor, and was explicitly designed to close the loop on the original series' ending while exploring the changed power dynamic between Peter and Miles now that both operate in the same universe.
