Spider-Man: Breakout #3
Spinning directly out of the pages of The New Avengers, this third chapter of the five-part limited series finds Spider-Man in the thick of a full-scale brawl, leaping through a storm of shattered concrete while grappling with a massive, chrome-armored brute. A woman in a green costume and a dark figure unleashing a burst of energy crowd the chaotic background alongside a fourth combatant, painting a cover that feels like the series has well and truly hit its stride. Mike Deodato Jr.'s pencils and inks deliver the whole scene with muscular intensity, and with Tony Bedard writing alongside artists Manuel Garcia and Raúl Fernández on interiors, this 2005 series makes a strong case for being one of Spider-Man's more underrated mid-2000s outings.
