When FBI Special Agent Steve Saunders investigates a failed bank robbery in a Kansas town, he and his partner Dick discover that a seemingly ordinary newcomer named Jack Benton is actually John Benson, a jail-breaking fugitive wanted for months—and he's just shot Dick to escape. Over the following weeks, Saunders pursues Benson across the continent as the fugitive flees toward the Canadian border, each misstep tightening the FBI's relentless dragnet around him. The hunt culminates in a North Dakota telephone building in late September, where Saunders finally corners his prey.
