Spawn cuts an imposing figure on this Francesco Mattina cover — cloaked in a tattered crimson cape, his symbiotic suit twisted into a wide, fang-filled maw with glowing green eyes blazing against a roaring wall of flame. The hellish atmosphere Mattina conjures here is genuinely striking, all deep blacks and volcanic oranges that make the hellspawn look both terrifying and eerily regal. Issue #287 is a strong reminder of why this long-running Image series continues to deliver some of the most viscerally compelling cover art in comics.
