Todd McFarlane's cover for this April 2013 issue is a striking composition — Spawn's enormous crimson cape billows dramatically against a glowing full moon, enveloping a young girl in a pink jacket who reaches outward from within its folds. Bats scatter across the red sky as the hellspawn looms protectively (or perhaps ominously) above a rocky precipice, with FCO Plascencia's colors giving the whole scene a vivid, blood-soaked intensity. It's a genuinely arresting image from a series that, 230 issues in, still knows how to command your attention.

Trivia · 7 facts

  • Part Two of the 'Complex Messiah' story arc, continuing Jim Downing's arc as the second Hellspawn following Al Simmons' death in issue #185.
  • Written by Todd McFarlane and Jon Goff; interior art by Szymon Kudranski; colors by FCO Plascencia; letters by Tom Orzechowski.
  • The standard cover by Todd McFarlane is a direct homage to his own Batman #423 (DC Comics, 1988) — a cape-dominated composition he originally drew before leaving DC to co-found Image.
  • A 1:25 retailer incentive variant reproduces the cover in black-and-white sketch form, also by McFarlane.
  • Story beats: the Vatican dispatches representatives to assess Jim Downing's claimed miraculous powers, and a member of Jim's inner circle meets a final fate.
  • Jim Downing (the second Spawn) carried the title as protagonist from issue #185 through approximately issue #250, when Al Simmons reclaimed the mantle — making #230 a mid-arc chapter of that roughly 65-issue secondary-Spawn run.
  • A Spanish-language reprint edition was released by Editorial Kamite (Mexico) in October 2017, featuring a B&W sketch cover.
