Hank drives Strong Bow to a ritual held by Strong Bow's tribe of Pueblo-dwelling Native Americans. Strong Bow tells the story of centuries earlier, when Aztecs use instructions from their sacred book, the Popol Vuh, to build a rocketship in an effort to escape the European invaders. The ritual, held during an eclipse, is intended to keep the Aztecs away. The ritual fails to do so, and the descendants of the original Aztecs that rocketed away return with weapons powerful enough to challenge the modern 'white men'. They have lived on Vulcan, a planet closer to the Sun, and are resistant to heat.
