"A Look at a Backward Planet" depicts alien beings observing Earth and encountering a superior alien race who warn them about humans. "The Peacemakers" follows a technician at a minuteman silo in the northwestern United States who detects a Soviet missile launch; a red alert is issued as American forces prepare for nuclear war. The final story, "Space War," chronicles the crash-landing of veterans Mather and Barbera on an alien planet where they encounter the robot RX23, which malfunctions and becomes violent before being shut down, and later they discover an intelligent alien preparing for a tribal ceremony in Africa.
Two alien armadas—the Saturnians led by Kaz and the Ixilik forces under Hypto—wage a devastating battle on Earth, each convinced that conquering the planet is essential to their survival. While Earth's scientists scramble to piece together evidence of the invasion and world leaders dismiss the warnings as hoaxes, the extraterrestrial forces clash with advanced weaponry and fierce determination, racing toward a confrontation that will decide the fate of the planet.
In "The Peacemakers," an accidental U.S. Minuteman missile launch over Baffinland sparks a global crisis when the U.S.S.R. retaliates. With tensions boiling and war imminent, an Earthman stationed on Venus steps in to stop the escalation before it's too late.
Mather and Barbera, two battle-hardened space veterans, crash-land on Momoon after a dogfight with the planet's patrol—and discover their superiors' warning about never returning wasn't quite what it seemed. What begins as a desperate fight for survival takes an unexpectedly charming turn when the true nature of Momoon's population becomes clear.
When the advanced alien RX23 descends to Earth to gather specimens for conquest, he selects an eclectic group of humans—an Inuit, a U.S. Marine, Mrs. Huntleighshireford, Nguta Lmu, a Russian, and a Swede—to judge whether mankind is worth controlling. What RX23 doesn't anticipate is just how unpredictably resourceful his captives can be when confined together aboard his spacecraft. The collision of alien logic and human stubbornness turns a routine reconnaissance into something far more chaotic than the commander ever planned for.
