Solomon Kane #5
The penultimate chapter of Marvel's six-issue limited series brings Robert E. Howard's grim Puritan adventurer to a fever pitch, with Frank Cirocco's cover painting a vivid scene of Solomon Kane standing atop a rocky outcropping, sword raised defiantly as a writhing mass of supernatural creatures claws and reaches at him from every direction against a burning amber sky. Dark birds wheel overhead, and the sheer number of grasping, inhuman figures pressing in from all sides makes the atmosphere feel genuinely dire. With "Hills of the Dead" as the story's title and only one issue left to go, this 1986 Marvel entry is a striking showcase for both Howard's enduring creation and Cirocco's moody, atmospheric cover work.
