A Colonel orchestrates a military strategy to rescue troops trapped behind enemy lines and destroy a Red gun convoy, sending a relief column to assist Bill Sterling's band while the main force launches a diversionary attack on the enemy position. As the rescue column sets out, the Reds move up their field pieces to zero in on the American forces, and despite successful bombardment of the enemy, Sterling is wounded in the ensuing combat. Weeks later, intelligence reveals the enemy has pulled back to a second defensive line across a river, prompting the Lieutenant to organize a patrol to verify this information before the sector advances into what could be a trap.
