Smiley Burnette gets rid of a crooked gambler named Charley Cheet and a criminal accomplice by tricking them into jail. The story then shifts as Smiley, unaware he has signed a contract with a booking agent, becomes entangled in a scheme involving a senatorial candidate's campaign manager. After various comedic misadventures including an encounter with a small Mexican boy named Miguelito and complications with a photographer, Smiley unknowingly signs a contract that binds him to work for "Mr. Grouchy Gus," a villainous booker who plans to exploit him. The tale concludes with Smiley realizing he has been duped into this terrible agreement.
