"Smiley Burnette and The Tale of the Topsy Turvey Hide-Out" follows Smiley as he pursues a news story into the desert, where he becomes stranded with his horse in the harsh heat. After a perilous journey seeking water, Smiley encounters the Desert Rat and his gang hiding out in the desert. In a separate story thread, Rocky Lane receives word from his friend Margaret Sue that trouble has arisen, leading to a confrontation involving escaped outlaw Zack and complications surrounding Margaret Sue and Rocky's wedding plans. Rocky and his allies must track down Zack and resolve the crisis threatening the scheduled wedding.
