The cover of this December 1997 issue poses a haunting question right on its face — "What Lies Beneath the Silver Skin?" — as a visually striking Silver Surfer, his cosmic form torn and cracking to reveal something beneath, rides his board through a wall of flame while grasping, red-eyed alien creatures reach up from below to drag him down. Tom Grummett's pencils and Matt Ryan's inks give the scene a raw, unsettling energy that feels genuinely different from the Surfer's usual cosmic grandeur. J. M. DeMatteis is clearly steering Norrin Radd into deeply personal territory with "Blind Eyes," and this cover makes a compelling case to find out what's waiting inside.
