“The Death Ray”

In "The Death Ray," the Pirate Prince finds himself in a jungle peril when his crew is ambushed by hostile natives—only to be rescued by a massive, mysterious gorilla named Bombo. With the prince’s daring plan to foil a royal wedding and protect Lady Marie, a clever ruse involving a wedding veil and a gorilla in disguise sets the stage for a moment of shocking revelation. Written, drawn, and inked by Dick Briefer, this 1941 adventure blends swashbuckling action with a touch of absurd humor, all rendered in the bold, energetic style of Jack Binder’s cover art.

The Pirate Prince drops anchor and a party goes ashore to get tree trunks to replace a broken spar. They are attacked by a group of violent natives, but are saved by a large gorilla, who is taken aboard and named Bombo. Some time later, Prince visits Lady Marie, only to find she is betrothed to the Duke of Pyewk. Prince saves Marie and substitutes Bombo in her wedding dress and face-covering veil. At the wedding ceremony Pyewk lifts the veil to kiss the bride and gets the shock of his life.
