A fearful Apache named Standing Turtle attempts to escape capture by a hunting party, knowing that if caught he will be forced to run the gauntlet and face torture, making his desperate flight a test of his cowardice. Meanwhile, old man Bragg and his associate Craine scheme to sell a horse with altered markings, but when Bragg's partner Willie sends word that a friend of his has been looking for Craine, Bragg warns him to lie low and take care of the business without drawing the sheriff's attention. The story follows the intersecting fates of these characters as they navigate deception, fear, and the harsh frontier.
