Shade, the Changing Girl #3
Part of DC's Young Animal imprint, this third chapter of Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone's series presents a quietly arresting cover by Becky Cloonan: a blonde girl in a vivid purple-and-black patterned coat stands with her back to us, facing an enormous, churning wave of teal and white foam that fills the entire background. There's something both vulnerable and defiant about her small figure poised at the edge of that rushing surge, perfectly capturing the series' theme of madness, identity, and the unknown. Kelly Fitzpatrick's coloring on the interiors promises the same bold, dreamy palette that makes this Young Animal title one of 2017's most visually distinctive reads.
