To Kill a Sergeant" puts DC's hard-bitten WWII sergeant in an especially desperate spot: Joe Kubert's cover depicts Rock locked in a brutal hand-to-hand struggle with a ferocious opponent, each man gripping the other's weapon as skulls loom overhead and a surrounding crowd of headhunters watches the outcome with chilling anticipation. The cover copy says it plainly — this is a fight to the death, with the victor claimed by whoever's left standing. Kubert's kinetic linework and the encircling tribal warriors make this 1978 issue feel genuinely tense before you've even cracked the spine.
