Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #126
In "When the Howlers Hit the Home Front!", Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos take a rare furlough in New York City with young Hans Rooten, only to be pulled back into danger when a distress call from Reb Ralston in Kentucky hints at a Nazi threat. With German spies targeting the Manhattan Project and Dum Dum wounded in a fierce confrontation, the team must fight their way free before heading back to Europe on a secret mission—leaving Hans in the care of the Ralstons and Dum Dum behind for recovery. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Dick Ayers with inks by Frank Ray, the cover by Dick Ayers and Frank Giacoia captures the tension of a mission that’s as personal as it is perilous.

When the Howlers fly back to the States on a two-week furlough with young Hans Rooten, they spend a day in New York City with family members. A call to Reb Ralston in Kentucky alerts Fury to possible danger and when they investigate, they are captured by German spies hunting for the Manhattan Project, which the Nazis believe is nearby. During the Howlers' escape, Dum Dum is shot and seriously wounded, but the others win the fight. The Ralstons offer to take Hans in for the duration of the war and the Howlers are ordered back to Europe on a secret mission, reluctantly leaving Dum Dum behind.
