Something is very wrong — and that's exactly the point. The cover of Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #30 (1966) sells the shock with gleeful audacity: a bare-chested, hands-raised Nick Fury surrenders to a blue-uniformed enemy officer while his Howlers stand corralled behind wire fencing, rifles trained on them from all sides. Dick Ayers and Mike Esposito stage the scene with real tension, making the unthinkable feel alarmingly convincing. The teaser for "Incident in Italy!" promises fireworks to follow, and with Roy Thomas writing and Dick Ayers on interior art, there's every reason to trust that promise.
