Några pojkar hittar dr Mahler mördad. Benito minns att doktorn haft en helig fågel, livets fågel, som han fångat på jantufolkets mark. När Benito undersöker saken visar det sig att en jantuindian dödat Mahler i försöket att föra livets fågel hem. Jantuindianen blir dödad av polisen men hinner släppa fågeln fri.
