Konstnären Roald Trask gör comeback och ställer ut på Blackmores galleri. Utställningen hotas dock av den legendariske konsttjuven "Skojaren". Trasks exfru Clarisse dyker upp och kräver att tavlorna beslagtas som kompensation för uteblivet underhåll. Senare samma kväll stjäls ramarna – men inte själva tavlorna! Privatdeckaren Jennifer Mays och kriminalreportern Gabriel Webb upptäcker att Blakemore bytt ut Trasks tavlor mot förfalskningar för att kunna sälja på svarta börsen. När Clarisse dök upp med sitt krav fick han brått att försöka sätta tillbaka originalen, men hann inte rama om dem.
