“In the Enemy's Hands”

In "In the Enemy's Hands," celebrated violinist Allegro finds his prized Stradivarius stolen after trusting music critic Chris Carlson with its safekeeping. When the thief leaves a trail of clues, the mysterious Mr. Terrific steps in—disguising himself as Allegro and using a borrowed Strad to lure the real culprits into the open. With art by Stan Asch and a cover by Harry Peter, this 1945 tale blends music, suspense, and a clever disguise in a classic wartime mystery.

Celebrated violinist Allegro gives a performance at the home of music critic Chris Carlson, who persuades him to lock his valuable Stradivarius vioin in his safe. Later, the safe is blown open and the violin gone. Terry tells Allegro to say that the violin was merely an ordinary one. The following evening Terry appears in Allegro's dressing room as Mr. Terrific, disguises himself as the violinist and performs in his stead, using another Strad. Carlson leaves and is followed, and is confronted by Mr. Terrific, who forces him to lead him to the crooks who stole Allegro's instrument.
