Astra and Rex are far out beyond our galaxy. Landing on a planet they find that all life forms there are unknown to them. They intercept an intergalactic distress signal and fly to investigate. On another planet they discover a human being menaced by a giant ant, which they drive off. On discovering a city populated by giant ants, they are captured, but Astra manages to emit an intergalactic distress signal and the ants find a way to communicate with them.
