Secret Hearts #4
In "You Only Love Once," a quiet romance blooms between Vera, a farm girl who waves at a passing train each day, and Jim, the engineer who returns her greeting—though neither knows the other’s true identity. When a mix-up leads Jim to visit her farm, their connection deepens, but their differing dreams of city and country life threaten to pull them apart. A dramatic twist involving a near-tragedy helps them find a compromise that honors both their worlds. The story is illustrated by Joe Giella, with a cover by Carlyle Blackwell Jr.

Vera waves to a train that passes by her farm each day, and the engineer waves back. She fantasizes that he’s young and handsome. One day Vera asks her friend Connie to wave since she’ll be away, and that’s the day that Jim, the engineer, took the day off and came to see who was waving. He thinks Connie is his faithful greeter, but quickly figures out Vera is the one, and they fall in love. However, Vera refuses to leave her farm, and Jim wants to live in the city. After Vera prevents a dangerous train derailment, she and Jim agree to split their time between the city and country.
