Just as Elaine gets her first real break as an actress, her mother falls ill and asks her to come home. Dr Rogers tries hard to get her attention, but she holds out for Bruce at her theatre in the city. When she can finally return, she loses her part in the play and finds Bruce in hospital at risk of permanently losing his voice—and in the arms of Vivienne. Elaine calls on Dr Rogers, one of the few surgeons capable of helping Bruce, and then leaves with him after the successful operation.
