“The Dweller in the Dark”

In "The Dweller in the Dark," Conan rises to captain of the royal guard in the city-state of Zahmahn and finds himself entangled with Queen Fatima—until a secret liaison with the servant girl Yaila leads to their imprisonment in a dungeon beneath the palace, where they face the terrifying Dweller in the Dark. Written by Roy Thomas and brought to life with bold, expressive art by Barry Smith, this gripping tale from 1975 sees Conan navigate betrayal, survival, and a surprising turn of fate, culminating in a dramatic choice that reshapes Zahmahn’s future. The cover, a striking piece by Gil Kane with inks by Vince Colletta, captures the story’s ominous tone.

Conan becomes Captain of the royal guard in the small city-state of Zahmahn as well as the lover of Queen Fatima. When the Queen catches Conan with the servant girl Yaila in a delicate situation, she leaves them in the dungeon to be devoured by the Dweller in the Dark. They manage to escape, however, and Conan throws the Queen to the monster. According to tradition, Zahmahn can only be ruled by a female sovereign, so Conan nominates Yaila as the new queen.
