Sam Wilson: Captain America #1 (2025) kicks off with "Better Angels Chapter 1," a bold new chapter in Sam’s journey as Captain America, written by Greg Pak and Evan Narcisse and illustrated by Eder Messias and Valentine De Landro. History

The series was conceived with a clear dual mandate: co-writers Greg Pak (Incredible Hulk, Weapon H) and Evan Narcisse (Rise of the Black Panther) have described the book as originating with Pak reaching out to Narcisse and the two building outward from character and theme — specifically, what it means for a Black social worker from Harlem to hold the Captain America shield in contemporary America. Marvel positioned the series as a deliberate companion piece to Captain America: Brave New World, with issue #1 going on sale January 1, 2025, roughly six weeks before the film's February 14 release, though Pak and Narcisse publicly noted they had no knowledge of the film's story and wrote independently of it. Artist Eder Messias (Phases of the Moon Knight) handled the primary pencils, with Valentine De Landro providing art for the issue's secondary backup story, and Fer Sifuentes-Sujo coloring throughout; editor Alanna Smith oversaw the series under editor-in-chief C. B. Cebulski. The five-issue limited series, titled 'Better Angels,' was subsequently collected in trade paperback as Sam Wilson, Captain America: Better Angels.

The issue contains a backup story illustrated by Valentine De Landro in which Sam Wilson reflects on his background as a social worker, Falcon, and Captain America, and the issue also includes an in-memoriam tribute to illustrator Greg Hildebrandt.
