Sam Hill, "America's Hard-Boiled, Wise-Cracking Sleuth," is in fine form in this 1952 Archie Comics entry, with Harry Lucey's cover showing the smooth, bow-tied detective leaning back at his desk, coolly dismissing a threat while his alarmed assistant Roxy holds up an ace of spades — a calling card someone clearly means as a warning. The cover's snappy speech bubbles crackle with tension and dry wit, capturing perfectly the push-and-pull between Roxy's alarm and Sam's breezy confidence, even as a shadowy figure lurks just outside the office door. At a dime a copy, this is vintage pulp-flavored fun drawn with Lucey's assured, expressive linework.
