“Shush”

Harvey's long-running Army humor series returns with issue #192, and the cover by George Baker throws our hapless hero into a wonderfully chaotic "Army Circus" — complete with a confused Sad Sack losing his grip on a tightrope pole, a blue bird hitting the ground with a resounding "PLUNK," a small dog (labeled "Mutsy") scampering across the wire, and a crowd of bewildered soldiers pointing and reacting to the mayhem. It's the kind of gentle, good-natured slapstick that made this series a fixture of 1967 newsstands, and Baker's loose, expressive linework keeps every stumble feeling more endearing than embarrassing. If you've ever rooted for the little guy who can't quite catch a break, Sad Sack remains one of comics' most warmly comic underdogs.
