Harvey's long-running army comedy is in fine form with this August 1963 entry, as the hapless Sad Sack — shovel in hand and standing in a freshly dug trench — accidentally ignites a burst of flame by lighting a cigarette directly over an exposed gas pipeline. A small dog and a bewildered sergeant look on from ground level, making the whole calamity feel both inevitable and endearing. George Baker's cheerful, rubbery linework captures everything that made this series "loved by millions" — the eternal promise that no matter how bad things get, the Sad Sack will somehow make them worse.
