George Baker's cover for this October 1961 Harvey issue says it all: the hapless Sad Sack sits in the grass, face peppered with watermelon seeds and question marks floating above his bewildered head, while a figure on a platform in the background blasts away with a gun. A loyal dog watches nearby as a second watermelon lies shredded on the ground — somehow our poor soldier managed to end up on the wrong end of this situation, as only Sad Sack can. At a dime a copy, this "Loved by Millions" series delivers the kind of gentle, good-natured military comedy that made Baker's creation a fixture of American funny books.
