The first features Rusty and his friend encountering a Native American and gold in a cave, leading to a confrontation that sends them fleeing. In the second story, titled "Tubby in Which Way Is Up?", Tubby climbs a mountain during autumn and encounters a group of hunters using deer as bait with headlights; after discovering their illegal "deer jacking" scheme and attempting to stop them with gunfire, Tubby manages to alert authorities. A third shorter story shows Rusty caught loitering near a city center's baseball team and taken into police custody, only to be released when his involvement in their scheme is cleared, after which he and his friends enjoy a football game between their team and Bakertown's athletic scholars.
Rusty, Tubby, and Spunky follow a mysterious map hidden in their great-granduncle’s war bonnet, leading them to Panther Valley in search of a long-lost gold mine. When they’re rescued by Wolf Fang, a young Apache boy who speaks English, they learn the map may point to the wrong side of the mountain—just as their guide, Harry Coll, arrives with a plane, determined to pull them back. With Harry refusing to believe the boy and the map, the trio must decide whether to trust Wolf Fang or risk losing the chance to uncover the truth.
Tubby, determined to keep up with Spunky and Rusty on their hike up Mount Hildy, insists on following the trail signs—only to misread them and take the left fork instead of the right. As he struggles through the woods, convinced he’s on the right path, the others grow worried and wonder where he’s gone, unaware he’s been trekking the wrong route the whole time. When Tubby finally reaches the summit house, he’s greeted with surprise and laughter for his mistaken journey.
Clancy the Clown and his troupe investigate a theft at the circus, suspecting two crooks planning to steal the night’s receipts. When a mysterious gorilla appears, Clancy realizes the creature is actually Toto in a costume, and uses the ruse to outwit the criminals.
Rusty, on a road trip through the mountains, accidentally captures deer jackers in his headlights and narrowly escapes them by using his shortwave radio to call for help. With the help of a police officer who hears his broadcast, he outsmarts the hunters using his radio and lights, leading to their capture.
In "The Gridiron Grab!", Johnny Harris is blackmailed into throwing next week’s playoff game after his girlfriend, Julie Peters, is threatened by unknown opponents. With help from Rusty, Spunky, Tubby, Benny, and Mike, the boys work to expose the crooks using a hidden recording, turning the tables on those trying to sabotage Center City High’s championship hopes.
When a mysterious fall from a mountain ledge at a remote lodge stirs suspicion, Sheriff Wilson, Detective Lieutenant Harry Mann, and Mark Legion find themselves drawn into a web of hidden motives. As tensions rise and secrets unfold, the group must uncover the truth behind the attempted attack on John Stone—leading them to suspect Tom the Guide, whose past and presence at the lodge hold dangerous answers.
