Stella returns from a failed Hollywood dream to help her mother run a boardinghouse, finding solace in her relationship with Barney—until the charismatic Denson Clark, a washed-up actor seeking a fresh start, takes a room and awakens old ambitions in her. As Barney's patience with Clark wears thin and Stella's sympathy deepens, the two men's opposing views of ambition and responsibility threaten to tear apart the couple's plans for marriage and a quiet life together.
When a young woman returns to her small hometown to restore the life she lost after tragedy struck, she finds herself caught between two men—one who shares her dream of farm life, and another whose ambitions pull in a different direction. After a painful break with the first, she accepts a proposal from his devoted friend and heads back to Lyleton, ready to reclaim the happiness she remembers. But as her wedding approaches, she'll discover whether the past can truly be rebuilt, or if what she's chasing is only a ghost of what once was.
Janie arrives at Ponderosa National Forest for a vacation and is rescued from a dangerous stove malfunction by Doug Farrel, a forest ranger who becomes enchanted with her passion for the wilderness—or so it seems. As her vacation winds down, Doug urges her to stay and join the Forest Service, and Janie accepts, taking the ranger oath with dreams of becoming his wife rather than serving the forests themselves. When Doug's younger brother George praises her commitment to the work, Janie feels a pang of guilt, realizing her true motives are far less noble than anyone knows.
