After graduating from college, Vern moves back to the Everglades to be with her family. When Vern’s sister and her husband are killed in an auto crash, Vern and her brother Jeff take custody of their little niece Jean. Vern loves Clint, but he says he wouldn’t want to adopt Jean if they married, and they break up. Jean runs into the swamp and is rescued by Clint, who now says he’ll take Vern and Jean in a package deal as his new family.
