The lead story follows Rocket Kelly, a space pilot, who is held captive along with others by the villain Nihil; Rocket devises a plan to have Nihil's ship dive at them so that he and his fellow prisoners can grab onto a pickup device and escape. A separate story recounts the historical achievements of aviation pioneer Santos-Dumont, detailing his early flying machine experiments, his successful flight around the Eiffel Tower in 1899, and his various setbacks and triumphs in early aviation. Another story involves a newspaper reporter visiting a museum curator to investigate a mysterious python and a large reptile on display, uncovering an apparent theft or fraud scheme at the institution.
Rocket Kelly and his crew rush to Bleak Mountain Observatory in Asia when Rocket's father reports strange happenings, only to discover Prof. Maynor has been murdered and his dangerous self-reproducing spore experiment is missing. Through a clever scientific technique, Rocket identifies the killer as Nihil—a criminal mastermind thought long dead—and tracks him to a hidden headquarters camouflaged in the mountains, where Nihil's men capture the interplanetary hero and his companions. Now Rocket must find a way to stop both Nihil's plans for destruction and the uncontrolled growth of the spore before it's too late.
Reporter Betty Boyd gets an assignment to cover a new forty-five-foot python at the zoo—but discovers the curator dead, his body crushed, and the snake mysteriously loose. As Betty digs into what really happened, she uncovers a scheme involving embezzled funds and realizes the danger is far from over.
