Sh’an sacrifices herself so that M’chen can return though the Boot Portal with Na’ia’s head. After delivering the head to her mother, M’chen dies from her wounds. Wyn gives L’chida a slow-acting, but fatal, poison and reveals to her that the whole situation with the Boot Portal was a plot devised by House Scorpio to resurrect portal travel, which House Scorpio would then control. She also reveals that her true allegiance is not to her father and House Aries, but to her dead mother and House Scorpio because her mother was killed years ago by Lady Tiana’s husband, Oby’a.
