Punk Rock Jesus #5

Penultimate issues don't always deliver this kind of charge, but Punk Rock Jesus #5 arrives in January 2013 with Sean Murphy's cover presenting three punk-styled figures — a shaved-head bruiser, a fierce young woman in fishnets, and a mohawked man — standing defiantly against a blood-red urban backdrop that makes the title "JESUS" feel both sacred and subversive. Murphy's raw, kinetic linework handles both story and cover duties throughout this six-issue Vertigo series, and the Newsarama pull-quote — "You've got yourself a disciple" — says plenty about the devoted following this mature-readers title had already earned. With one issue left after this, "Disciples" looks primed to push the series toward something genuinely unforgettable.
