Punisher: Soviet #3

Paolo Rivera's cover for issue #3 of this MAX Comics limited series is a striking piece of Soviet-inspired propaganda art — Frank Castle dominates the composition, skull emblem front and center, rifle raised, his expression carved from cold stone as shadowy figures loom in the background. Cradled against his chest is a bloodied young person, a quietly devastating image that gives the otherwise hard-edged scene an unexpected weight. Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows are doing what they do best with Punisher: Soviet, and this 2020 installment — subtitled "And I See by Your Gravestone You Were Only Nineteen" — promises that kind of grim, purposeful storytelling the series has been building toward.
